Mid Coast Hospital offers real help for long-term weight loss

Mid Coast Hospital's popular Center for Weight & Lifestyle Change is offering two new classes: one class meets every Thursday, for 12 weeks beginning April 19, and the other class meets every Tuesday for 12 weeks beginning September 13.

Classes take place from 4:30-6:00 p.m., at the Running Start gym at Mid Coast Hospital. Each class is limited to 16 people. A referral from your Primary Care Provider (PCP) is required.

The Mid Coast Center for Weight & Lifestyle Change addresses the complex problem of obesity. "Most people who have a history of being overweight will tell you that they know how to lose weight, but that they have trouble sustaining weight loss," said a program staffer.

This program uses a multidisciplinary approach that covers the nutritional, emotional, and physical issues contributing to obesity. Classes include nutrition guidance and weekly feedback, individual and group behavioral health sessions, and exercise coaching.

This program also offers many solutions to help participants make lasting changes to improve their health.

  • Learn to identify unhealthy lifestyle patterns with food
  • Learn to tell the difference between emotional and physical hunger
  • Gain instruction in meal and exercise planning
  • Develop a healthy body and self image
  • Set realistic weight and lifestyle goals
  • Identify personal barriers or sabotaging behaviors
  • Design successful strategies to ensure sustained success and maintenance of a healthy weight and lifestyle

Who is the right person for this program? It is for people that have a Body Mass Index (BMI) equal to or greater than 27.5, and are at least 17 years old. It is designed for those who are motivated to make measurable, long term changes in their lifestyle to achieve a healthy weight and better fitness. In addition, it is intended for individuals that can commit to spend time on themselves and work with our specialized staff.

"This is a program that has made a huge change in my life. I feel better and am doing more than I have in years," said a past participant.
