GIFFORD’S ICE CREAM STANDS OPEN FOR 2012 SEASON WITH FULL SLATE OF ACTIVITIES

Gifford's Ice Cream's five family-owned ice cream stands are open for the 2012 season. The stands, in Skowhegan, Waterville, Farmington, Bangor and Auburn, will be open through October 14 and will welcome customers this year with special promotions and new flavors.

Gifford's will use its Facebook page, www.facebook.com/GiffordsIceCreamMaine, to share information about specials and promotions. "We have a lot of fun things in store this season," said Lindsay Gifford-Skilling, Vice President of Sales at Gifford's. "Facebook is a great way for people to see what we are doing, and for us to learn from our customers."

Facebook is converting their business pages to the Timeline that we utilize on the personal profiles on March 30.  Of course for those that can't wait they have released an early version.

City of Lewiston Accepting Applications for Plourde Memorial Scholarship

The City of Lewiston is now accepting applications for the annual $500 Alfred A. Plourde Memorial Scholarship.  The scholarship—in memory of one of Lewiston’s most popular mayors—was established by donations from family and friends in 1990.  The scholarship is awarded each year to the Lewiston High School senior who is pursuing a post-secondary education and shows the most interest and promise in a career in public service.

The application deadline is April 16, 2012, and an application must consist of the following:  an essay of 500 words focusing on the topic “The Role of the Young Political Leader in Today’s World;” a copy of high school transcript; a statement of public service career goal and major in post-secondary education; and name, address, and contact phone number.

Demolition on the West Wing of Auburn’s Great Falls Arts Center

Demolition on the west wing of Auburn’s Great Falls Arts Center, the home of L/A Community Little Theatre, began on Tuesday. The historic former Edward Little High School building, on the corner of Academy and High Streets, is also home to ELHS’s drama club, Camp of Rock’s summer program, and two other local businesses. The brick building, built in the 1870s, is owned by the City of Auburn and leased to CLT for the next 99 years.

Preparation work for the demolition on just one side of the building, which continues in earnest on Wednesday, has been underway for weeks. The work for the city and CLT has been coordinated by Joy and Hamilton Architects, under the leadership of Bill Hamilton.
