LEWISTON , Maine - The Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen and The Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock ( CHaD ) recently announced a unique partnership that encourages community building, wellness and youth philanthropy among young adults 23 or under. The Positive Tracks Challenge Grant for Youth program encourages young adults to become involved in their community while raising money for a great cause.  Funds generated through the program will support vital services that The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing and CHaD provide to children and families throughout New England .

The Positive Tracks Challenge Grant for Youth program is funded by organizations throughout New England .  Funds raised by participants 23 or under for the 3rd Annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen on Oct. 8 & 9 and CHaD Hero Half Marathon and Ripcord 5K on Aug. 28 will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000, and benefit the organization specific to each event.

"This is an incredible experience, where so many people get together for a cause," said actor and Dempsey Challenge event namesake, Patrick Dempsey. "It shows you the true power of community.  When kids are empowered to help kids, everybody wins."

The Dempsey Challenge, the primary fundraising event for the Dempsey Center, is comprised of an L.L.Bean 5K and 10K run/walk and Auburn Firefighters Local 797 Kids’ Fun Run on Oct. 8 and cycling distances of 10, 25, 50, 70 and 100 miles on Oct. 9. Dempsey is scheduled to participate along with pro cyclists LevI Leipheimer, Tom Danielson, Davis Phinney and Connie Phinney.

“Partnering with CHaD has allowed us to combine efforts, share mutual resources and maximize our exposure in our communities and beyond,” said Dempsey Center Executive Director, Wendy Tardif. “This collaboration is essential to our growth and sustainability and we’re thrilled to be working with our friends at CHaD ."

The CHaD Hero Half Marathon and Ripcord 5K will take place at the Dartmouth College Green in Hanover , NH . The event begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28 with Cam ’s Course, a 1-mile family fun run around Dartmouth College Campus. The main event will set off at 9 a.m. with runners and walkers released simultaneously onto the courses.

Since the inaugural event in 2009, Dempsey Challenge participants have raised over $1.7 million to benefit the Dempsey Center . Funds raised ensure the Center’s services remain free of charge to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers; and led to the creation of The Healing Tree Children's Program. The ChaD Hero Half Marathon and Ripcord 5k has raised over $1 million dollars for children's health since its inception in 2006.
