Man arrested after 6-hour standoff in Lewiston | News
LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A man is taken into custody without incident after a six-hour standoff with police at a Lewiston inn on Lisbon Road.
The standoff started around 7:15 Tuesday night at the Morning Star Inn with a man holed up in one of the rooms with a gun.
Other residents at the motel said the man appeared drunk.
Richard Lamothe is staying at the Morning Star Inn and told NEWS CENTER, "He gave me a threatening phone call and I proceeded to call management. I got out there before he did and I looked around the corner, and he was breech loading a firearm. My first thought was, this guy is crazy tonight. He's intoxicated. He needs some help."
State police tactical teams were brought in and the situation was resolved peacefully just after 1 this morning.
Lamothe went on to say that he didn't believe the man was out to hurt anybody and that he believes he was just upset over the holidays, or trying to get attention.
Police say 43-year-old Jeff Sewell, who lived at the motel, is now charged with criminal threatening and causing a police standoff.
Other people staying in the motel have since safely returned inside.
