AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The man accused in the 1980 murder of Rita St. Peter in Anson is scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday in district court in Skowhegan.
Jay Mercier, 55 of Industry was arrested Wednesday and remains in custody at Somerset County Jail. Mercier's arrest may give hope to family members of other cold case murder victims here in Maine that they may find justice, too.
According to state police, there are about 70 unsolved homicides here in Maine dating back to about 1971, there are an average of 20 to 25 homicides in Maine each year, and police solve about 90 percent of those cases, which state police spokesman Steve McCausland says is among the highest rates in the country.
