AG says "hang up and delete" to avoid fraud

AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine's Attorney General is warning consumers that the best way to combat fraud -- is to avoid becoming a victim in the first place.

Attorney General Janet Mills says that despite state and federal efforts to crack down on the kinds of scammers that target people by phone or email -- the problem isn't going away any time soon.

Mills spoke at a forum in Auburn Thursday night. she says scams cost Mainers millions of dollars every year -- money that could go towards bills, improving the local economy, all kinds of things.

But otherwise intelligent people are giving away their personal information by mistake because the scammers can sound very convincing. She says the best policy is not to engage.

Mills also warns Mainers not to click on links in emails, even from friends and family, if the link is the whole email -- or if there's just one vague sentence before it. That's another way scammers get you.
