Auburn takes new approach to winter storms

AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- As budgets tighten the City of Auburn is using a new way to manage it's streets during winter storms.

The Snow and Ice Control Plan puts every street in to a priority group.  Priority 1 is 15 of the most traveled streets while Priority 4 is more than 400 residential and less traveled roads.

The goal is to have fewer city crews on the road to cut down on expenses.

But residents will see a change in how their roads are managed.

Priority 1 roads will be plowed every 2 to 2.5 hours.

Priority 2 roads will be plowed every 3 to 4 hours.

Priority 3 roads will be plowed every 4 to 6 hours.

Priority 4 roads will be plowed every 6 to 8 hours.

Poland Spring Resort expansion part of 'economic cascade' expected from new casino

POLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Workers are buzzing all over the 500 acre property of the Poland Spring Resort, making a major investment in anticipation of the building of a casino in nearby Oxford.

"We're seven and a half miles from the proposed location," explained the resort's owner Cyndi Robbins.  "From the very beginning, they are going to need rooms.  They are not building the hotel part for two to three to five years from now.  I see this is a great place for the resort to be."

Resort staff, many of whom normally would be idle because the resort's three inns are shuttered for the winter, have been helping renovate the old Poland Spring Motor Lodge which sits right on busy Route 26.  They are building a new reception area with a gift shop, arcade and breakfast nook, and updating the rooms, in an effort to make the 33 room lodge a year round hotel.
