Lewiston/Auburn VA Clinic Moving Forward

Congressman Mike Michaud, Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health, announced that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded a contract for the construction of the new VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), which will be located at 15 Challenger Drive in Lewiston, just off the Lewiston exit of the Maine Turnpike.  CD Smith Construction, which is the same company working on the new Bangor CBOC, was selected by the VA for the construction of the Lewiston CBOC.

“I have been working with the VA to make sure that this project stays on track and gets up and running as soon as possible,” said Michaud.  “I am pleased that the VA is moving forward with construction, and I will continue to monitor their progress.  Our veterans, in particular our older veterans who have difficulty traveling to Togus, have waited long enough for VA services closer to home.”

According to the VA, the new CBOC will be a one-story building that wi

Lewiston seeks volunteers

LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The city of Lewiston is looking for volunteers.

Volunteers have been helping out with the police department for two years now, and now the city is expanding the program to help with other areas of city government. Those who want to get involved can find applications online and at city offices. The city will place people with departments that can use their skills.

Mayor Larry Gilbert says the program is not an attempt to replace city workers. These jobs are strictly just to help out. Click here to learn more about the volunteer opportunities that are available.

Public to discuss future of L-A interchanges

LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The results of a recent traffic study don't reflect the hopes of some transportation officials but it points them in a new direction.

The most recent traffic study in Lewiston-Auburn indicates that only 11% of people traveling to or from Lewiston-Auburn for work use I-95.

That number does not support the need for new exits that are closer to each City's downtown business district.

But the Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) and Department of Transportation recognize there are some challenges with the existing exits that hinder access and development options in each city.

Plans are now being considered for updating Exits 75 and 80 and the MTA is looking for input from the public.

Those meetings are set for:

Monday October 4th, 7pm at the Ramada in Lewiston.

Tuesday October 5th, 7pm at the Fireside Inn in Auburn.

Masons collect gifts for troops

AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Members of the Masonic Lodge in Auburn are once again collecting gifts for troops serving overseas.

This is the fourth year the group has collected gifts.  Last year they had more than 12,000 items donated.

Mailing the gifts to troops costs thousands of dollars but they say giving soldiers a piece of home during the holidays is worth every cent.

They'll continue collecting items for about two more weeks.

The Gift Drive itself continues this weekend at the Lodge on Turner Street in Auburn.

More than 4,000 registered for Dempsey Challenge

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) -- More than 4,000 people have registered for this weekend's Dempsey Challenge to raise money for a center that helps families cope with cancer.

It's the second year of the fundraiser, started by "Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey. He's from Buckfield.

He launched the challenge last year with a bike ride to raise money for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

This year's event has been expanded to two days. There will be walking and running events Saturday and bicycle rides through central Maine between 10 and 100 miles on Sunday.
