Two Buildings Come Down

Two Buildings Come Down

JAY- Last week two local buildings in Jay were torn down. The state recently bought the two properties from Fred Franchetti, a local busniness owner, and plan to build a small parking lot were the two building used to be. This is all apart of the Route 4 Contruction project going underway. The two buildings were not in operation at the time, both have been vacant for over 10 years. Previous to the destruction the property to the left was a post office for the village of Chislom (04222). Most recently though it was a Unicel cellular company office. The other property to the right, a three story building,  was an Italian restaurant and then a bakery. The two other floors above were used as apartments. The state plans to start constructing the parking lot in the summer of 2012.

Gritty McDuff's announces launch of Gritty's growlers in its three Maine brew pubs

Gritty McDuff's announces launch of Gritty's growlers in its three Maine brew pubs

Portland, ME - Gritty McDuff’s announced today that it is selling Gritty’s Growlers, refillable containers of draft beer available for carryout, at its three brew pubs in Portland, Auburn and Freeport.

“We’re thrilled to be selling Gritty’s Growlers,” said co-owner and master brewer Ed Stebbins.  “We’ve been getting requests for some time from customers about having fresh-from-the-tap beer available to them at home; and now we can offer it to them.”

Growlers are a longstanding brewing tradition. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, fresh beer was carried home from the local pub in a small galvanized pail. Rumor has it that when the beer sloshed around the pail, it created a rumbling sound as the CO2 escaped through the lid, thus the term "growler" was coined.  Today, the pail has been replaced with a 64 ounce glass jug. The glass jugs are more convenient than pails and environmentally friendly.

Great Falls' Shows its Might

If there's one thing to love about the Lewiston/Auburn area, it's Great Falls. I shot this video early last week as spring runoff swelled the Androscoggin and made Great Falls roar.
