All Shelters Closed from Tropical Storm Irene

UPDATED: August 30, 2011 9:00 AM

All shelters in the State of Maine that were opened to assist the public during Tropical Storm Irene and its aftermath have now been closed.

15 shelters were opened in response to the storm, and another 17 were on standby prepared to open. American Red Cross chapters in Maine opened and staffed regional shelters in several locations in coordination with county and local officials. Additional locations were opened and run by local communities.

The shelter effort was supported by County Animal Response Teams that were mobilized to care for pets who accompanied their owners to shelters.
